Trash Couture

“These photos would eventually dictate my personal style in photography; Monochrome.”

2010, Niccolo Cosme’s workshop.

It was around a small class of around 5 students. To test our skills and what we’ve learned, we had to come up with a shoot that advocated environmental awareness. It was my first and most memorable project.

The Materials I used for the fashion pieces were recycled unused garbage bags. The pressure pushed me to new heights. And I quote Niccolo saying this while I was apparently stressing out.

“Stress is good.”

Indeed the stress was good. Finished the pieces in 3 days. The workshop ended with a big exhibit at the then Lighthouse Studio at Orosa Street, Malate.

I remember that night I logged in my email account, clicking send to join the workshop. That small decision changed my whole life. I remember Perou’s visit in Manila talking about how photography changed his life; from the shy boy to one of Britain’s top photographers. I guess I could relate to that.

After Hours

The ball ended and we had a little chat.”

My good friend Bettina Pascual posing for me after a social event. She was my very first muse. Every time we went to parties, she would wear something special and I’d be there to shoot it. That motivated me to create a photo set of her called ‘Project Pascual’. I eventually invited her to model for my very first dive into conceptual fashion photography.

Midnight Caller

“Stop calling me Chiquita. You don’t say that to girls you don’t even know.” - Jane Greet (The Big Steal, 1949)

I shot this at Heirloom Manila. A location I found through extensive research over the internet.

I met the family who owns the place. They were very inviting and friendly. One of the more memorable photos I’ve done in my earlier years in photography. It was the first time I had to navigate and drive myself to get to the location . Using friends as models who were happy to have their photos taken.

Mary’s Blue Hat

“The Hat was blue. It didn’t matter. It’s an Era Shoot at the fourth floor. No one would see.”

Mary came to me and asked me to shoot her. I usually won’t shoot people pro bono but I saw raw talent. She was planning to start up as a model. I invited other photographers to shoot her too. For a Novice Model with Zero Experience, I have to say; the photos came out quite nice!

Interesting how the color blue translates to very nice tone of gray.

Black Witch

One of my early works in fashion/portraiture shot 2 years ago. Another photo from the same set got displayed as a Billboard over the highway.

What Brings You Here?

Yuki; wearing a gray top, sheer skirt, Chanel belt and black boots.  Like a vagabond wandering in the world of Fashion. Just add the laid back silhouettes and grand entrances, because it does make a lasting impression.

Now Directly quoting her.

Leave the bongga outfits for the many days to come!

How She Got Away

“She went inside. Stole things. Walked away and disappeared into the shadows. She was a master of beauty and disguise.”

We shot Katarina at the School of Design and Arts Campus. Prior to this, I only had 3 days to set up a team. I even had to invite a student to be my assistant because I really can’t handle the pressure of just shooting in 3-4 hours.

Everyone was starring at her. It’s not often that an international model would shoot in campus. The Security guards who would usually pester us didn’t even bother us. People were surprised. The team loved the attention Katarina drew. But we had to shoo these people away.

The shoot was inspired by those old Film Noir, Hitchcock films. I loved how shadows show mystery. A story could be made up around simple things by just adding the right light.

The Big Sleep
She was worth a stare. She was trouble. - Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe (The Big Sleep, 1946)

Katarina was fun to be with. Shooting her is a breeze. She’s one of the few models who I didn’t need to direct anymore. She’s this good but to my surprise, she’s never done Philippine Fashion Week. She told us that they don’t really pay big. Saying she’s better off doing TVC’s. I guess I have to agree; Katarina’s done really big TV commercials. What an ordinary model at fashion week can earn (and still depending on the number of shows); she can earn in only one day.

Now I leave you to guess how old she is.

Doppelgänger

According to Wikipedia

Doppelgängers often are perceived as a sinister form of bilocation and are regarded by some to be harbingers of bad luck.

I shot this for a friends final project at fashion school. The theme was about androgyny. We decided to do something that was related to dualism and split personality but still keeping true with the androgynous style. The Queen of Hearts from a deck of playing cards comes into mind, but this time it’s dark and evil like a soul being split into two.

Everything was well, till I found out that the friend who I worked on this went rotten. He was hiding his true form. In the fashion world; He was the Sinister form; the harbinger of bad luck. We had to get far from these bad vibes. Yes there is a back story. Full of unreturned clothes, vile ulterior motives, manipulation, deceit and lies. He was infecting everyone who came in contact with. Playing with emotions and tons of debt. We were victims.

Enter from behind

Shot somewhere in a Makati condominium near the Greenbelt mall. The back entrance smells like a clean sterile hospital; the scent of detergents seeping through the porous walls from the neighboring Laundromat.

Surprising results from the Pop-up flash.
